A Study of Asymptomatic Plasmodium Parasiteemia

Abstract
|
|
|
In order to study asymptomatic cases of plasmodium parasitemia among Korean troops in Vietnam, a follow up study was done after exposure to hyper-endemic area to those who had been taken malaria chemoprophylaxis and to those who had not taken them.
The results were as follows:
1. A sample of 1,000 troops who had been participated in combat at malaria hype-endemic area was taken, a repeating blood smear for two to three weeks revealed that 21 persons or 2.2 per cent remained asymptomatic in sprite of plasmodium parasitemia.
2. Troops returned home during the period of July, 1966 through August 1967 were examined for asymptomatic plasmodium parasitemia at least twice by means of blood smear on board troop carrier from Vietnam to Korea. Asymptomatic carrier of malaria plasmodium was totaled 0.355 per cent. Among them cases of Plasmodium falciparum was 0.292 per cent and of P. vivax was 0.063. These troops were supposed to have been taking malaria chemoprophylaxis while thier tour to Vietnam. That is chloroquine-primaquine compound once weekly.
3. 90 per cent of asymptomatic parasitemia cases of P. vivax was turned out as neglected one to chemoprophylaxis, while in case of P. falciparum slight significance of incidence rate was noted between two groups of chemoprophylaxis in term of their regularity.
